Megalopolis | Film Friday
This is perhaps one of the oddest films released so far this year. It is a passion project from the director of the Godfather films and has received a somewhat divisive reception from audience and critics alike. The trailers which preceded its theatrical release failed to spark my interest, but the controversial reception did entice me to go see it for myself.
It was not good.
I think audiences right now are so exhausted by the endless sequels and franchise films, that we have found ourselves in a situation in which any original film, no matter how terrible, is praised, or at least defended, because it is such a relief to have something new.
But, it goes without saying, that novelty does not in fact entail quality. And Megalopolis demonstrates that perfectly.
Now, to be fair, I do have to give Francis Ford Coppola credit for at least trying to create something original. However, it would have been nice to see something original and well made.
