A new trailer from the studio A24 just released for a film simply entitled Warfare. The project is written and directed by an Iraq War Veteran named “Ray Mendoza” and Alex Garland, who was the director of Ex Machina and a film called Civil War which released earlier in 2024.
Ray Mendoza was the military consultant on that film and the scenes of combat which were depicted towards the end were potentially the strongest part of “Civil War.
At least from what we can see in the trailer, this new film, Warfare, looks like it will be full of non-stop, unrelenting depictions of combat during the Iraq War. In many ways this strikes me as similar to something like Dunkirk, in which the combat and situation of individual soldiers in war will be the primary focus, rather than some superimposed narrative.
While that may not be for everyone, it does look like a potentially intense and potentially realistic film. But, perhaps realism is a bit too much to ask.
