Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone | Film Friday
This film from the turn of the century launched a major magical fantasy film franchise, with 8 films, 3 spinoffs and more. It was also a major cultural phenomena for many years and while perhaps not as big now as it once was, it still remains a nostalgia filled, fan favorite for many people.
The story follows a young orphan boy who is living with an aunt and uncle who do not really want him around, when he receives a surprise visit from a stranger who tells him that he’s a wizard, and takes him off to a school called “Hogwarts,” to learn magic. On the way to school, Harry meets and becomes friends with two other students – Ron and Hermione.
Over the course of his first year at Hogwarts, Harry learns more about his dead parents and where he came from, and becomes a key player on the school’s sports team of Quidditch. Eventually, he discovers that there is a magical stone (the philosopher’s stone) hidden in Hogwarts and that the dark lord, Voldemort, is trying to find it with the aid of one of the professors, Quirrell.
Ultimately, Harry discovers the stone and is confronted by Quirrell, who attempts to take it from him. However, Harry is protected by magic and Quirrell is defeated and Voldemort goes back into hiding.
