The Only Hope for Star Wars

The new trailer for the long-awaited second season of the Disney+ show Andor, came out a few days ago.

At this point, Andor is arguably the only new Star Wars production worth watching – well, Season 1 was at least. Unfortunately, there is a very good chance that this second season will prove yet again that there is a large, almost wilful, disconnect between what audiences actually want to see and what Disney executives push through production.

Season 1 succeeded, in large part, because it gave us a refreshing break from fan-servicing and endless cameos.

It was also very well structured, with smaller narrative arcs that were spread out over 3-4 episodes, and were all part of a much longer and larger story. This definitely made Andor feel much more like a mini-series than just a TV show.

It also meant that the story could be more thoroughly fleshed out and well developed. Even characters which were just “passing through” lasted long enough for you to get to know who they were and something about what drove them.

Overall, Andor clearly set itself apart as a much higher caliber show than the other Disney+ Star Wars productions which have been released over the past several years. I am very much looking forward to seeing what Season 2 will bring, but I am also very cautiously optimistic.
