Did This Really Happen? | Guy Ritchie and “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”

Guy Ritchie’s latest work tells the story of the first-ever special forces unit formed during World War II. The film is based up recently declassified documents of the British War Department, and tells what it claims to be a true story – but was it?.

The film itself was quite enjoyable, although not Guy Ritchie’s finest work. It certainly suffered somewhat from pacing, particularly in the middle. And it contained one of the worst portrayals of Winston Churchill I think I have ever seen. Which would have been fine, if he had only appeared for a few minutes at the beginning, but his character kept reappearing and it was always quite jarring.

There was also too much exposition. I think it is fair to assume that at least 90% of the people who went to watch this film already knew at least a little bit about why World War II started. So, while it isn’t necessarily bad to include a reminder to help clearly set the scene, this film included (what felt like) a ten minute summary of what happened in World War II.
