The War of the Rohirrim | Film Friday
This new installment in what is potentially the most popular and iconic fantasy movie franchise proved itself to be a major and frustrating disappointment, proving yet again that sequels and franchise films are not the way to go.
The story is supposed to be based on Tolkien’s tales of Rohan in the appendices of Lord of the Rings. It is set almost 200 years before the events of the “War of the Ring,” which was the main focus of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and depicts the events of a war between the legendary Helm Hammerhand and a Dunlending lord named “Wulf.”
When Wulf comes to Edoras seeking the hand of Helm’s daughter, Hera, in marriage, Helm and Wulf’s father Freca become infuriated with one another and end up fighting outside the hall, with Helm accidentally killing Freca in the process.
Wulf is enraged by this and leaves to assemble armies of his own, before returning to attack and attempt to conquer Edoras. Helm and his people retreat to their fortress in the mountains, where they settle in for a winter siege.
