“Joker” | Film Friday
This psychological thriller from the late 2010’s may be the best version of a villain focused film I have ever seen. It depicts the story arc of a classic and arguably iconic Batman antagonist, but does so in a manner that is both incredibly fascinating and somewhat disturbing. It certainly exceeded the expectations I had for it.
The story of this film follows a man by the name of Arthur Fleck, who is clearly struggling to make ends meet in order to support both himself and his sickly mother. It is also clear that he is struggling with various mental health disorders and finds it difficult to fit into normal society.
A key example of this is his inability to understand why the people around him laugh at certain things, which he doesn’t find particularly funny – but they don’t laugh at things he laughs at.
Towards the beginning of the film, Arthur Fleck goes to visit his appointed social worker, who informs him that due to lack of government funding, the department is being shut down and he will no longer be able to get the medication he needs to keep his mental illness in check.
