Having proposed a couple of my own theories about how twenty one pilots’ early work fits into the Dema story, I now turn to explore how this actually effects the meaning of those songs – particularly songs which have very meaningful real world significance.
At this point I have proposed several different theories about how various songs and albums by Twenty One Pilots can be tied into the larger Dema narrative. But the songs I am looking at have been from their earlier albums, both of which were independently released: Twenty One Pilots and Regional At Best.
Some have argued against these theories, saying there is not enough evidence to support the claim that these early albums can be in any way connected to the Dema narrative, since it is more widely accepted that the story began with Blurryface, and maybe Vessel.
Others have simply rejected my theories on certain individual songs, because those songs already have a clear meaning outside of the Dema lore and so it doesn’t seem to make sense to bring in this different meaning to them. The song “Ruby” off of Regional At Best is a prime example of this. We know the song was written about a girl Tyler knew at this church growing up, so it is therefore impossible that the song could have any other meaning or significance, right?
Well, maybe not…
