If you are looking for a vividly realistic and gripping science fiction movie, then look no further. Despite a low budget and minimal dialogue, this film delivers one of the most eerie and subtly intense narratives I’ve seen in a while.
When I first stumbled across Europa Report, I figured it was just another typical indie sci-fi film – with a low budget and cheesy dialogue. And while the budget may have been low, the dialogue was not cheesy. In fact this film was far better than many studio productions and proved itself to be incredibly underrated.
The story depicts a crew of astronauts on a mission to explore the moon of Jupiter known as “Europa.”
Almost everything about this film felt real. (Except for some moments at the end, which I’ll return to in a moment.)
Not only was the dialogue not cheesy, it didn’t feel scripted at all. The conversations felt like real casual conversations people might have, and not only that, quite a few of the conversations did not drive forward the plot at all.
Now, you might hear that and think: well that sounds like a pretty boring movie, and certainly parts of it moved a little slow, but it also wasn’t a long film overall.
Furthermore, as I mentioned earlier, there was an underlying eeriness to every moment, so that even when the characters were just having a casual conversation, you as the audience were constantly on edge, wondering what might be about to go horribly wrong.
